Yüksek bir tepeden Antakya’ya bakıyoruz. Şehir Plancıları Odası Hatay İl Temsilcisi Serkan Koç endişeli. Bu yeni kent yıkılan Antakya’dan hiç bir iz taşımayacak mı? Antakya’nın gökyüzünü aylardır kaplayan ve dağılmamaya kararlı görünen tozun içinden, kentin her yanına dağılmış vinç kuleleri yükseliyor. Bütün kent bir şantiye alanına dönmüş. “Dönüp şu kente baktığında, bir insan neden burada yaşasın ya, neden?” diye soruyor Serkan. 

İmre Azem 6 Şubat depremleri sonrası Hatay belgesellerinin ilkini, 2023’ün Nisan’ında çekmişti. Belgesel serisi 2023 Eylül’ünde ikinci, 2024 Şubat’ında üçüncü filmlerle devam etti. Serinin dördüncü filmi olan bu belgeselde, depremlerin üzerinden geçen iki senede hâlâ düzelmeyen barınma, sağlık ve eğitim başta olmak üzere hayatın her alanında devam eden ve derinleşen sorunların yarattığı bıkkınlığa, yorgunluğa, dilimiz varmasa da yer yer umutsuzluğa tanık oluyoruz. Geleceğe dair umudu korumak, Antakya’da başlı başına bir mücadele alanına dönüşmüş durumda.

We are atop a hill overlooking the city of Antakya. Serkan Koç, the Hatay Representative of the Chamber of Urban Planners looks worried. Will this new city resemble at all the old one? Through the persistent smog that has covered the sky above Antakya for months, construction cranes, dotting the skyline. The entire city has turned into a huge construction site. “Take a look at this city, why on earth would anyone live here, why?” Serkan asks me.

İmre Azem completed his first documentary about Hatay in the immediate aftermath of the 6 February 2023 earthquakes, in April 2023. He later continued what became a series with a second documentary in September 2023 and a third in February 2024. In this fourth film of the series, we witness exasperation, fatigue, and although we do not want to admit it, in some cases, despair. This is the result of deepening problems in housing, health, education and just about every aspect of life even now, a full 2 years after the earthquakes. Holding on to hope for the future itself has become a struggle in Antakya.
