Using our mother tongue as an inseparable part of our social and cultural identity is one of our foundational human rights. As much as the right to education in the mother tongue, the right to access culture and art in the mother tongue is also an inseparable part of this right. In Turkey, where various mother tongues are spoken, and yet books, publications, music and other such productions are highly limited except for those in the dominant language, the frequently asked question is: how much can people who use different languages in the field of culture and art use this right? At what level is the production of culture and art in Kurdish, Armenian, Greek, Lazuri and Arabic, and what are the access opportunities and difficulties of reaching such productions, publications or events? At the Forum for Access to Culture and Art in the Mother Tongue, writers, publishers, filmmakers and cultural directors that work in various languages will discuss these questions, and we will listen to the experiences and thoughts of participants.

WHAT IS GOING ON IN IRAN?

10 December 2019 Tuesday 19:00
Tütün Deposu

Participants:
Mehdi Shabani (Filmmaker/Journalist)
Aidin Akhavan (Expert in politics and economy)

DOCUMENTING THE CURRENT DAY: A HURDLE RACE (2019)

11 December 2019 Wednesday 18:30
Cezayir Salonu

#CinemaCannotBePutOnTrial.

When we came together with filmmakers documenting the current day in the Hurdle Race Forum as part of the 9th Which Human Rights? Film Festival in 2017, we had discussed the obstruction of filming and screenings, the censorship of films, and the banning of independent film festivals and events by the governorship and district governorship. Documenting the current day was a hurdle race. We can say that these days, the hurdles aren’t decreasing but in fact, increasing; filmmakers are standing trial, and they face heavy prison sentences. The testimonies and self-expression of art and artists are not tolerated. Prohibitive and oppressive practices that care not for law and order take away any opportunities from journalists, academics and filmmakers. They are left to face heavy prison sentences. The cinema that cannot escape censorship today is handed over to oppressive and punitive policies. We will come together with filmmakers, lawyers, and organizations, associations and platforms that support rights to discuss the violation of rights taking place in this field and the attempts to obstruct and ban, to document those who are documenting the current situation and defend our freedom of expression, we will share our experiences and resist against oppression, and we will discuss methods of campaigning. Because #CinemaCannotBePutOnTrial.
